Born in Shanghai, China, Allen grew up surrounded by traditional Chinese folk music along with the works of Mozart, Chopin and Beethoven from his dad’s vast collection of classical music. It wasn’t until he moved to the US did he pick up playing instruments, the first of which was piano at the age of 7, and guitar at 12. In college at UNC-Chapel Hill, he started producing music and by his senior year, he made the decision to forgo a spot in dental school to pursue a career in music as an artist
