A passion for Jazz and Beats brought together these three young artists to build this project that restores all the letters of nobility to HipHop and Rap! It’s a gift that the Cascade Records family wanted to give to you for free his first official release * Sal hit me up some time ago about putting together a mix which made me think it was a good chance to connect with and get to know my peers here in Japan. So I started hunting for producers and tracks I wanted to use. I talked to a lot of dope folks after I found a lot of dope shit but a hand full of key producers I wanted to include didn’t like the idea of their stuff being on a free mix which knocked out several of the tracks I was most excited to share (they were all otherwise super friendly, sent tracks and discussed other possible options). After that I heard 9planets mix and decided the next best thing would be to make a bunch of beats from all Japanese sample source. I also decided that I had better have some help so I sent Ackryte an email and I talk to Broke almost everyday so…. After we got further into it and more excited about the tracks we were getting I decided to ask Sal if CR would be interested in taking the project on as a formal free release. I think 90-95% of it was finished in a month and a half or so and the rest was -Fuck, I can’t believe it’s been 6 months! Anyway, there’s one song in which the main sample is not from a Japanese artist and it should be rather obvious -I broke the rule, at first because I was mistaken (bad beat/sample management) and then because I didn’t care and liked the beat! I’d like to give extra special thanks to John McCaig at PanicStudios Seattle for smoothing everything out and making it sound more like these things all belong together and AL_PDs fellow Sketch Cartel member Jonathan Lane for the use of his illustration which kind of got a bit buried -sorry Jonathan! After that the rest is obvious, Ackryte, Broke, Sal, Sport G, Machak, Low and everybody who has and will take the time to check it out. Repeat Pattern contacted me like 6 months ago and said he was working on a project that included exclusive sampling of Japanese jazz, rock, folk, etc, and he asked me if I wanted in. I told him I was definitely interested and we started exchanging sample ideas and drafts of beats. Samples were hard to find, but those we did find were golden. A couple months after starting, we were done with everything but mastering and album art. In the end, I think everybody’s styles came together perfectly. Props to Repeat Pattern and Broke, a couple of extremely talented individuals who I’d work with again – no question. Also a big shout out to Sal Martin, FantasticClick & Sport G, Low, and Machak for helping make this happen. Chad told me he was doing a mix for Cascade with a Japanese sample theme, so I got to digging and with the help of some friends (Whatup Kesh!) I got my hands on some Japanese Jazz/Pop records and went to work. Hearing what Chad and Ackryte had come up with really made me step my game up and got me hungry to make something. After doing a few beats I decided the only one I really dug was the one that made it in the mix, so I switched focus to rhyming. I’m a relatively slow writer, but a firm believer in quality over quantity, so I hope I didn’t disappoint. Big shouts to Chad, Ackryte, Sal, Sport G, the whole Cascade crew, Johnathan for his illustration, and Machak and Low for the artwork. A very special thanks to everyone who takes the time to listen, download, and spread the word. Please keep your eyes and ears open for more from us in the future!
